Summer programs for high school students have become an issue of growing concern among parents and high school students who wish to grow. Summer programs are ideally designed to improve the students’ admission prospects for colleges.

Today, the majority of colleges offer at least one pre-college program inviting high school students to explore campus, visit with faculty, and even take courses during the summer months.

Owing to the growing number of applicants, an obviously increasing number of selective colleges are beginning to screen how applicants spend their summers during high school.

Some parents, in response to this trend, invest thousands of dollars on summer programs that should provide for an enriching experience but do little to distinguish their child from the rest of the applicant pool. Obviously, very little or nothing is achieved.

Most summer programs are just “cash traps” accepting any high school student able to pay the bill. Participation in these summer programs will be viewed by your prospective colleges as evidence of wealth, rather than evidence of any special ability.

However, there is a growing minority of selective summer programs that select high achieving high school students strictly on the basis of merit.

A number of these programs are offered for free or at relatively low costs and will prove an impressive addition to your college application. The following is a list of summer programs for high school students:

NYU Precollege will be conducted exclusively online for Summer 2025. 

This program lasts for six weeks. You can earn college credits, connect with NYU faculty and classmates, and discover passions that can shape your life. As a Precollege student, you will be an NYU student with access to the online resources, community, and global network that make NYU unique.

If you already know what you want to major in, or if you want to try out a subject you’ve never studied before, NYU Precollege is the best way to develop your skills and prepare for college.

Application Deadline: June 24

Scholarship Application Deadline: April 1st

Students interested in applying for a scholarship must submit their NYU Precollege application no later than April 25th. The supplemental scholarship application must be submitted by the April 1st deadline.

The 2025 Summer Precollege application will be available on February 1.

Tisch School of the Arts Summer Residential High School

Earn credits and train in acting, dance, design, dramatic writing, filmmaking, game design, photography and imaging, production and design, or recorded music with one of the top art schools in the country, the Tisch School of the Arts.

NYUSPS Aspire is a scholarship program for rising high school juniors from underrepresented communities who will be first-generation college students.
