About the Federal College of Education Zaria

Federal College of Education, Zaria is a College of science and art located in Zaria, Kaduna State, Nigeria. It was formerly known as Advance Teachers’ College (A.T.C), Zaria established by the Government of Nigeria.

In April 1959, the Federal Ministry of Education, realizing the cardinal importance of educational development to a nation newly attaining political independence, appointed a Commission under the chairmanship of Sir Eric Ashby.

Sir Eric was the Master of Clare College, Cambridge, appointed to investigate the needs of Nigeria in Post-School Certificate and Higher Education.

On the basis of the report of this Commission, which was significantly entitled “Investment in Education”, the Government of Nigeria in 1961 presented to the parliament a white paper on educational development up to 1970. READ MORE

Objectives of FCE Zaria

The aims and objectives for establishing the college at the takeoff can be summarized as follows:

– To provide professionally qualified non-graduate teachers of Northern origin to man the Secondary and Teacher Training Colleges in the region.

– To provide professionally qualified Assistance Inspectors for primary schools. This is done through the products or graduates of the College, to be able to gradually Northernise the entire staff of all the Secondary Schools and Teacher Training Colleges in the region.

The College’s vision is to be a cradle of Teacher Education aspiring to meet the demands of modern challenges through renewed ideas based on global best practices in teaching and learning by harnessing its local, national and international potentials.

Its deriving pulses being meeting the challenges of a growing economy in Teacher Education in a dynamic society.

The Mission of the College is to train teachers for the service of the dynamic society through renewed research and acceptable global practices in the teaching profession.

Ensuring that Teacher-Trainees are put on a dynamic course in meeting the challenges of dynamic modern society.
