Before you go on to check out the 7 sure tips on how to prepare for JAMB, read a little about the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board to know more about the examination body.

Brief About JAMB

By 1974, there were seven (7) Federal Universities in the country. Every one of these existing universities conducted its own concessional examination and admitted its students.

However, this system of admission revealed serious limitations and quite often, a waste of resources in the process of administering the concessional examination especially on the part of the candidates.

The general untidiness in the uncoordinated system of admissions into universities and the attendant problems were sufficient causes for concern to the committee of vice-chancellors.

However, these problems had assumed a new dimension when by 1976, the then federal military government, under the leadership of General Olusegun Obasanjo, established six (6) additional universities.

Consequently, the government set up a national committee on university entrance under the chairmanship of Mr M. S. Angulu.

The Committee was specifically requested to consider the possibility of setting up a Joint Matriculation Board. The Committee recommended the setting up of two (2) bodies, the Central Admissions Board and the Joint Matriculation Board.

Furthermore…

The Federal military government accepted some of the recommendations of the committee and set up the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board.

However, the legal instrument establishing the Board was promulgated by the act (no. 2 of 1978) of the Federal Military Government on 13th February 1978.

By August 1988, the Federal Executive Council amended decree No. 2 of 1978 to empower the Board to conduct matriculation examinations for entry into all polytechnics and colleges of education in the country and to place suitably qualified candidates in the available places in these institutions.

The amendments have since been codified into decree No. 33 of 1989, which took effect from 7th December 1989.

Seven (7) Sure Tips on How to Prepare for JAMB UTME

Below are the 7 Sure Tips of Preparing for JAMB UTME.

1. REVISE YOUR TEXTBOOK AND PAST QUESTIONS REGULARLY:

For an examination JAMB, you have to bring your game to the table because that’s what determines your admission into the university. Pick up past questions from at least 5 years beforehand, and study carefully.

You should also make study notes to help organise your written materials into sub-headings, bullet points and diagrams as too much written stuff can be off-putting.

2. REST AND AVOID EXAM ANXIETY:

When exams are upon you, it’s difficult for you to think about anything else. Take a few deep breaths and try as much as possible to be well rested prior to your examination day.

3. MAKE SURE YOU SLEEP WELL THE PREVIOUS NIGHT:

Sleep is very essential. In as much as you want to spend enough time revising and getting work done, it is absolutely necessary to sleep well the previous night because lack of sleep can contribute some amount of stress which might put you in a bit of instability for the exam.

4. AVOID DRINKING CAFFEINE THE MORNING OF THE EXAM:

Caffeine is a stimulant and even though it makes you feel good for a short term, it gives you migraine in the long run. Avoid caffeine drinks including coke, energy drinks and coffee because at the end of the day it makes you urinate and you really do not want to get up each minute to the bathroom as you write on the day.

If, however, you must have coffee, try as much as possible to add enough cream to it.

5. TAKE BREAKFAST AS LIGHT AS POSSIBLE:

Eating too much on a regular day is not advisable for anyone because it makes one weak and lazy. Studies have also shown that students that skip breakfast experience a 20-40% of thinking skills, and so it is not also advisable to skip breakfast.

But before your exam, eat as light as possible so that you don’t get too heavy and slow, or sleepy.

6. LEARN TIME MANAGEMENT:

Time management is key to a successful living. Stress often comes from the belief that you are running out of time to prepare; therefore by allocating time blocks for each important topic nothing will be missed and your worries will disappear.

7. DEVELOP A POSITIVE MENTAL ATTITUDE AND PRAY TOWARDS YOUR EXAMS:

A positive mental attitude is another way to prepare for your exam. The minute you start having negative thoughts, it begins to work against you.

To overcome failure, you have to first set your mind to it then back it up with prayer. There is nothing that a right attitude and prayer cannot do.
