Stanford MBA Program

Academic Experience

Here you will learn from and have access to world-class faculty, guest speakers, and leaders of the industry.

You’ll also spend each day collaborating with talented, diverse, engaged classmates who will teach you more than you can imagine.

Evaluation Criteria

The school base its evaluation on the totality of information available. No single factor whether your college performance, essay, test scores, interview, letters of reference, or work experience is decisive.

It considers each application holistically and takes into account factors such as your background, experiences, perspectives, fit with Stanford GSB and its MBA Program, aspirations, values, and accomplishments.

Intellectual Vitality

In assessing intellectual vitality,

Stanford Business School believes that your attitude toward learning is as important as your aptitude and hopes that your application will convey your passion, dedication, and genuine interest in expanding your intellectual horizons.

Demonstrated Leadership Potential

As it reviews your application, It considers your leadership potential as demonstrated through your personal character and professional competence.

Your personal character matters not only because integrity is the cornerstone of any academic community, but also because of the vast responsibility our society places on leaders of businesses and social-sector organizations.

Personal Qualities & Contributions

The strongest applications the school sees are those in which your thoughts and voice remain intact. The Stanford MBA experience relies on authenticity among students.

To understand how you will contribute to and benefit from the university community as it needs to know who you are, not simply what you have done.

Application Process

Below are the application processes for the various programmes.

Education

On your application,

Stanford Business School requires you to provide the following information about your education:

➛ All undergraduate and graduate institutions you have attended after high school (postsecondary school)

➛ Academic degree(s) pursued and/or received

➛ Grade point average (GPA)

➛ Transcript of courses

➛ Language proficiency

GMAT & GRE

While Stanford Business School knows that scores on standardized tests do not always portray your abilities accurately, they still play a helpful role in the evaluation process.

Your test scores are just one piece of your application. It takes into consideration your scores within the context of factors such as the resources available to you, the educational systems within your university and country, etc.

Either the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) or the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is required for admission.

There is no preference for one test over the other. If you take both exams, you may provide both scores. Candidates applying to joint-degree programs that require the GRE should not feel obligated to take the GMAT.

TOEFL, IELTS & PTE

The school accepts the following English-language tests:

➛ Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)

➛ International English Language Testing System (IELTS)

➛ Pearson Test of English (PTE)

Professional Experience

Work experience is not required for entry to the Stanford MBA Program as it welcomes applications from college seniors and recent college graduates, as well as those with all levels of work experience.

Stanford Business School values the diversity of experience in our student body, so no specific industry, function, or background is preferred over another.

It is more interested in the impact you have had on your workplace than in the name or stature of your organization.

Letters of Reference

Stories about your behaviours, impact and personal qualities told by others play an essential role in our evaluation of your application.

Your letters of reference should provide specific examples and anecdotes that illustrate your ability and desire to make a difference in the world.

MBA Requirements

Two letters of reference:

➛ One reference from your current direct supervisor (or next best alternative) at work

➛ One reference from someone else who has supervised your work

Both letters of reference must be submitted by the deadline of the round in which you apply. You must not write, or have any involvement in, the drafting, translation, or submission of the letters.

Personal Information, Activities & Awards

These are the required personal information, activities and awards.

Personal Information

As part of the application process, we ask you for some personal information, including:

➛ Date of birth

➛ Citizenship

➛ Family information

➛ Social Security number (for U.S. Citizens and Permanent Residents only). Only the last four digits will be visible in your application.

Essays

Essays help us learn about who we are rather than solely what we have done.

Other parts of the application give insight into your academic and professional accomplishments; the essays reveal the person behind those achievements.

When writing your essays,  it is better to keep them simple: answer the question. Resist the urge to “package” yourself into what you think Stanford wants to see.

Doing so will only prevent the school from understanding who you really are and what you hope to accomplish. The most impressive essays are the most authentic.

Application Fee

The MBA Admissions Office evaluates your application and releases your decision only if you pay the application fee.

Standard Fee

The MBA Program application fee is $275 and is nonrefundable and it must receive your fee by 11 am Pacific Time on the deadline day for the round in which you are applying.

Reduced Fee

The fee for candidates who qualify for a reduced fee is $100.
