University of Agriculture, Makurdi (UAM)

The University of Agriculture, Makurdi (UAM) is a higher education institution in Makurdi, Benue State, Nigeria. Also, the university was established in 1988, following the recommendations of a 1987 federal government White Paper on Higher Education curriculum and development in Nigeria.

However, on the 14th of July 2019, President Muhammadu Buhari approved a bill renaming it the Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University. The University of Agriculture, MakurdWe has over 30 departments in ten colleges.

UAM is forming links to ensure that agricultural technologies and the output of its research reach average small-scale Nigerian farmers, the intended beneficiaries of the university’s research and extension programmes.

Faculties of UAM

Below are the Faculties/Colleges of the University of Agriculture, Makurdi (UAM):

1. College of Agronomy
2. Also, there is the college of Agricultural Economics and Extension
3. College of Engineering
4. Also, College of Animal Science
5. Additionally, there is College of Food Technology and Human Ecology
6. Furthermore, there is College of Sciences
7. Also, College of Agricultural and Science Education
8. College of Veterinary Medicine
9. Plus, College of Forestry and Fisheries
10. College of Management Science

However, for outreach and public service support, UAM has established a Co-operative Extension Centre (CEC) and a Centre for Food and Agricultural Strategy (CEFAS).

The above focus on practical agricultural extension liaison support and public policy support services, respectively.

Research and Extension Programmes of UAM

1. Root and Tubers programme
2. Also, Cereals and Legumes programme
3. Furthermore, Forestry and Horticulture programme
4. Additionally, Ruminants programme
5. Non-ruminants programme
6. Also, Farming systems programme
7. Socio-economics programme
8. Furthermore, Rural infrastructures programme
9. Also, Agricultural Mechanization programme
10. Plus, Environmental and Analytical Studies programme and Food Processing and Utilization programme.

The Cooperative Extension Centre through its training and extension liaison services coordinates the outreach programmes. And the Centre for Food and Agricultural Strategy coordinates the public service support in food and agriculture.

Institutional links are being forged with federal and state Ministries of Agriculture and other related agencies to identify areas of collaboration and technical support from the University.

Also, the university has been involved with the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture in research on the socio-economic aspects of soybean production.
